At What Stage in a Renovation Should I Paint?

One of the most common questions we get from homeowners involved in an extensive room or home remodel is when during the renovation process should they have their walls painted? The confusion over this is very understandable. If you’re having flooring installed you don’t want to risk anything happening to your beautiful new floors, but what about the risk of having those freshly painted walls scuffed and dinged in the process of the old flooring being removed and new one laid?

Which Comes First, the Flooring or the Paint?

This may seem like a question with no perfect answer, but what it really comes down to is whether or not your baseboards will be removed or replaced when the flooring is. The processing of ripping out baseboards will cause damage to your walls that requires repair. For this reason there is little point in painting prior to this step.

If your baseboards will be untouched when the flooring is changed, you can paint at any stage in the process. Of course, it can still be beneficial to have more permanent features like flooring, countertops, or even window treatments installed prior to painting. With thousands of color options it is much easier to find the perfect paint to coordinate with these pieces than matching them to your wall color.

Protecting Your New Floors From Paint Spills

A good painting company will respect your home and take the necessary steps to make sure all of your belongings, including your flooring, are properly protected during the painting process. If you are feeling concerned about how they will care for your home, just ask! Any company that isn’t ready to provide you with an answer to this probably isn’t one you want to have performing work in your home.

You may be wondering if you can save a little money by asking your painting contractor to paint while your old flooring is in place and therefore skip the preparation steps they would take to protect your flooring. With a high-quality painter who is always concerned with doing their very best work, this will simply not be an option.
