A Before and After Painting Tale:  Janine’s House

Janine was in search of unique new ways to finish the interior of her home, and had a lot of new ideas.  She found Karen’s Company, a painting company that specializes in interior color painting, decorative effects (including faux finishing) and exterior painting. Janine called and set up an appointment for a free estimate. During this appointment, Karen and Janine spent time discussing color possibilities for each room. Janine had a lot of ideas, and needed help deciding on color selections and ideas for new window treatments. Karen referred her to Hallie, a professional designer, for a color consultation and design session.  After the consultation with Hallie, Janine had a complete plan for adding color to the entire interior of her house, including several new ideas for decorative painting.   Once this plan was set, Karen returned to Janine’s house, went over her paint plan, and gave her a new estimate based on the additional design features.

During this process, Janine received a separate bid from another painting company so that she could compare cost and time estimates.  In the end, Janine chose Karen's Company because their bid was more detailed and specific. It spelled out each step of the painting job and what the process was going to cost.  Since she knew exactly what to expect, she felt confident choosing Karen’s to do the work.

With all the administrative details set, Karen worked with Janine to set a date to start painting.  Karen’s crew rang Janine’s doorbell at the specified date and time, and got right to work.

As the crew started working, they noticed Janine had three slightly different colors of woodwork paint, and the casing on the doors had a lot of variation from area to area. The crew made appropriate recommendations to make the finish more consistent, and a work order was added to the job for painting the doors, casings and some of the windows with oil-based paint.  Karen tried to plan this additional work at minimal cost to Janine, and in the end it only required two additional days for one painter.

Janine’s house was an exciting and creative project for Karen’s Company.  In the master bedroom, they painted the double-coffered rounded corner ceiling with one color on the horizontal planes and another shade of color on the vertical planes. The headboard wall was painted with stripes that matched the coffered ceiling. The remaining walls were painted with a lighter shade of one of the ceiling colors. The master bedroom hallway was painted with the darker ceiling color. The master bath was painted with a complimentary color, coordinating with one of the accent colors in the tile. The commode room has a faux blend of the bedroom and bathroom colors.

When it was time to do the faux paint effect in the commode room, Karen spent time with Janine demonstrating several variations of the faux finish on the room’s walls. Janine was impressed with the time Karen took to model each technique and its resulting finish variation.  She selected one finish and was very satisfied with the result.

In her dining room, Janine wanted a "crackle" faux finish with a deep red paint over a light base coat. Unfortunately, red is a two-coat paint color and the "crackle" topcoat is a one-coat process. Our initial attempt at the red topcoat resulted in an unsightly striping effect of light and dark shades of red.

Before Janine had a chance to say, "I don't like it," Karen let her know that the crew was already applying a new base coat so they could try again. The entire room was masked off and a larger sprayer was used to quickly apply the two coats of red. As the paint dried, the painters manually manipulated the crackle process to achieve the desired effect.

Janine was thrilled with the new color and unique paint effects in her home, and was very pleased with the professionalism and hard work of the Karen’s team.
