Decorative painting creates
inexpensive transformations
According to Karen Van Dehy of Karen's Company, a painting
business based in Lafayette, decorative painting has
been gaining in popularity for many years. "There
are many reasons for this," she says. It is extremely
versatile, comes in many flavors and can create an endless
array of effects in a room. Additionally, you can create
a nice textured or faux effect for a portion of the
cost of good wallpaper."

Flatirons Community Church
For several weekends in September 2002, Karen volunteered
her time by painting the interior of the new church
in Lafayette, Colorado. She rolled walls, cut in around
corners and flooring, helped with color selection and
helped organize the other volunteer crew members with
painting direction, proper tools and paint. She also
provided some of the hand tools for crew members, such
as brushes, trays, roller handles and roller covers
and cut buckets.
Sanchez Elementary School
In May 2003, Karen spent a day organizing the painting
of playground equipment at Sanchez Elementary School
in Lafayette, Colorado. She oversaw volunteers and
helped with some of the painting herself.
Brick Oven Pizza and Subs
Prior to the opening of the Brick Oven, Karen and Candi
went to the future restaurant to do a glaze on some
of the walls. The restaurant owner had chosen the colors
and had hired the contractor to do the base coat on
the walls. Karen had done a sample board for the owners
showing them the painting technique they would use.
When Karen and Candi started the faux process, they
quickly discovered that the paint would not "move"
around on the walls and they had to change their technique
to achieve a similar effect. It was later discovered
that the contractor painter had use a "contractor
grade" paint for the base coat rather than the
top quality grade of paint.
